Many disciplines work together at the highest level within the UMCs. Thanks to the expertise and infrastructure, they can offer complex, highly specialised care to each patient, however ill he or she may be.
The UMCs offer a 'last resort' function for patients with complex healthcare issues. The emphasis is on top-reference care, innovation and development.
Objectives for 2020:
- Qualitative improvement and more cost efficiency of care through concentration and task distribution of the most complex care (top-reference and top-clinical);
- Development of new treatment methods from the academic component and assurance of better transfer to regular care as soon as these methods have been tested;
- Improvement of care for people with an orphan disease (characterised by small patient numbers) by clustering orphan diseases and bundling knowledge and expertise at expertise centres;
